“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” Harriet Tubman
This is Black History month when we shed light on those brave and daring ones who demonstrated strength, patience and passion…and who dared to dream not only for themselves but also for generations to come. Our 3rd and 4th graders will be going to The Grand theater to see “Walk On: The Story of Rosa Parks”. Afterwards they will walk down Market Street to the Delaware History Museum where they will participate in five narrated dramas depicting African-American heroes from Delaware who broke barriers and overcame obstacles to achieve personal greatness and expand opportunities for others. This type of experiential learning has the power to transform how students think and act. Students are learning how their own determination can make a difference in the struggle for freedom and equality that still exists today.
Urban Promise is ‘dedicated to the proposition’ that transformational relationships are at the heart of change in our homes, our cities and ultimately our nation. Margaret Mead believed that a small group of committed people has the capacity to change the world… in fact it’s the only thing that ever has. Look back beyond the Black History month heroes to Jesus and His group of twelve. A rag-tag bunch of fishermen and assorted characters, who by following Jesus turned the world upside down, are an encouragement to us as we struggle with the issues of today. We are still confronted with violence, injustice, inequality and hatred. The cry for freedom and peace is still heard across the land. We long for a simpler time and simpler lives. The answer is in our dreams!
God communicates powerfully with us in dreams. In dreams we can see things not just as they are, but as they might be. In dreams we join the ranks of Thomas Jefferson and our founding fathers, of Abraham Lincoln and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., of Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman. Our teachers and parents at the Urban Promise School are dreaming for the future of our students. Together we can all change the world. Please support us with your strength, patience and passion … and take action! Be a mentor, sponsor a child, be a partner, attend the Spring Auction, and pray for this ministry daily. Dream big!
